When a couple begins to think about fatherhood, it is logical to trust that the arrival of a child will be quick and that it will not be long to be able to announce the pregnancy with happiness to their family and friends; However, sometimes pregnancy is expected ... and with the waiting comes the worry and the need to go to a fertility specialist.

In a study carried out recently in our General Plaza de la Salud Hospital, we show that in 20% of cases this is not the case. Data that coincide with other regional studies and statistical records provided by the WHO and the Latin American Network of Assisted Reproduction, which states that one in six couples of reproductive age can not achieve a full-term pregnancy (approximately 15 to 20%) of couples of childbearing age).

Fertility in the human being is approximately 15 to 20% per month, that is, in the first month of having unprotected sex only between 15 and 20% of couples get pregnant.

The probability of getting pregnant accumulates in each menstrual cycle. This implies that, after 12 menstrual cycles trying, the probability of getting a pregnancy is 80 to 85%.

For some couples, the apparently frequent miracle of conception is not so common. The frustration and anguish of not getting the desired paternity opens the door to a cascade of emotional problems that lead to blockage, despair and stress. The people in their environment, who do not live with the problem, do not support them enough or do not know how to do it.

It is time to take action.

When the time comes to seek professional help, you should choose a health center that provides confidence, since the communication with the team of professionals who treat the case must be complete, without ruling out the possibility of receiving psychological support.

There they will undergo both the necessary tests to detect those factors that are negatively influencing the obtaining of a pregnancy that comes to term.

Depending on the result of the tests, they will be informed of the options available to them and, if necessary, the recommendations of the assisted reproduction technique that best suits their condition.
