Emergency

The demand for care in the health sector is increasing and the Emergency does not escape this reality where 150-170 patients are cared for each day and last year we assisted more than 56,000 patients with an increasing rate of 3 to 5% annual. This raises the need to work on constant improvement of care processes, adequate classification of patients who visit us based on their presentation symptoms (Triage) and clinical decision making protocols.

Our institution since 2003 had the vision of the need to have the necessary human resources to care for critically ill patients. I believe the residency of Emergency Medicine and Disasters has allowed in an evolving process to have at present an emergency assisted 24 hours a day and 7 days a week by Emergency Specialists which have a room with 30 beds (the largest in the country), specialists on duty in the hospital (surgeons, obstetricians, intensivists, etc.) that ensure adequate continuity in medical care; support personnel such as residents, nurses, transport assistants and everything necessary for laboratory studies and images.

In addition, since 2015, after our remodeling, we have a pediatric emergency with independent waiting room that has 10 care posts and pediatric doctors trained 24/7; and we are the only emergency in the Dominican Republic that has 2 isolation spaces with negative pressure for the reception of patients with infectious diseases.

In an emergency that compromises the patient's life, at times where the time factor is fundamental, having emergency physicians trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, advanced airway management, placement of central lines, among other skills, can be the difference. This in a work environment with everything necessary to face complex health problems, makes the Emergency of the General Hospital of the Plaza de la Salud the best equipped in the country.
